How the Calculation Works

The tool converts each date into a serial day number — the count of days since a fixed reference point — and subtracts one from the other. Working with serial numbers means the result is always exact, because the calendar's irregularities (28-to-31-day months, leap years) are already baked into each date's position. The raw day difference is then broken down into weeks, months, and years for readability.

Days, Weeks, Months, and Years

Days and weeks are pure arithmetic: weeks = days ÷ 7. Months and years, however, are calendar quantities, not fixed durations — a "month" can be 28 to 31 days. The calculator therefore counts whole calendar months between the dates and reports any remaining days on top, so June 1 to August 20 reads as 2 months and 19 days rather than a rounded decimal.

Why Leap Years Matter

A common year has 365 days and a leap year 366; the average is 365.25 days, which is why we add February 29 roughly every four years (skipping century years not divisible by 400, such as 1900). Because the tool anchors on real dates, any span crossing a February 29 automatically gains that extra day — important for interest, payroll, and contract calculations where a single day changes the total.

Use the calculator to find how many days until a project deadline, wedding, or product launch; to compute someone's precise age for forms or eligibility; to measure tenure, subscription length, or notice periods; or to count the nights of a hotel stay or rental. For billing that charges per calendar day inclusive of both ends, remember to add one day to the exclusive difference the tool returns.
