Average Calculator
Calculate the mean, median, and mode of any set of numbers instantly.
How to Use the Average Calculator
Type or paste your numbers separated by commas, spaces, or new lines, and the calculator returns the mean, median, and mode at once, along with the count and sum. It handles decimals and negative numbers, so you can drop in test scores, sensor readings, prices, or survey responses without cleaning them up first.
The Three Measures of Central Tendency
"Average" usually means the arithmetic mean — mean = Σx ÷ n, the sum of all values divided by the count. The median is the middle value after sorting (or the average of the two middle values for an even count), and the mode is the most frequently occurring value. Together these three describe the "center" of a data set from different angles.
Choosing the Right Average
The mean is best for symmetric data with no extreme values — it uses every number. But a single outlier can drag it far from typical: one billionaire in a room of teachers inflates the mean salary while the median barely moves. That is why house prices and household incomes are usually reported as medians. The mode is most useful for categorical or repeated data, such as the most common shoe size sold.
Where Averages Are Used
Averages turn a pile of numbers into a single figure you can act on. Students average grades to track a GPA, businesses average daily sales to spot trends, scientists average repeated measurements to reduce noise, and analysts compare a value against the mean to judge whether it is high or low. Reading all three measures side by side reveals the shape of your data — whether it is balanced, skewed, or clustered. All calculations run entirely in your browser.
