The Three Measures of Central Tendency

"Average" usually means the arithmetic mean — mean = Σx ÷ n, the sum of all values divided by the count. The mean is best for symmetric data with no extreme values — it uses every number. How do I calculate the average (mean)?
Add all the numbers, then divide by how many there are: mean = sum ÷ count. For 10, 20, and 30 the mean is (10 + 20 + 30) ÷ 3 = 60 ÷ 3 = 20.
What is the difference between mean, median, and mode?
The mean is the arithmetic average. The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often. For 2, 2, 3, 9: mean = 4, median = 2.5, mode = 2.
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
Use the median when the data has extreme values (outliers) that would distort the mean. For incomes of 30k, 35k, 40k, and 900k, the mean is 251k — misleading — while the median of 37.5k better reflects a typical value.
How do I find the median of an even count of numbers?
Sort the numbers and average the two middle ones. For 4, 8, 15, 16, the two middle values are 8 and 15, so the median is (8 + 15) ÷ 2 = 11.5.
Can a data set have more than one mode?
Yes. A set with two values tied for most frequent is bimodal, and one with several is multimodal. If every value is unique, the set has no mode.
