Unit Price Calculator
Compare prices per unit to find the best deal while shopping.
How to Use the Unit Price Calculator
Enter the price and quantity of the first product, then the second, and the calculator shows the price per unit for each and flags the better value. Use consistent units — ounces against ounces, grams against grams — so the comparison is fair. The tool is built for the moment you are standing in the aisle deciding between two sizes of the same item.
The Unit Price Formula
Unit price is simply unit price = total price ÷ quantity. The result answers "how much does one ounce, gram, litre, or item cost?" and reduces every package to a single comparable number. For example, a 24 oz jar at $5.49 is 5.49 ÷ 24 = $0.229/oz, while a 16 oz jar at $3.89 is 3.89 ÷ 16 = $0.243/oz — so the bigger jar saves about 1.4 cents per ounce.
Why Bigger Is Not Always Cheaper
Retailers count on shoppers assuming the largest package is the best value, but "bulk penalties" are common — sometimes the mid-size or a promotional smaller pack has the lowest unit price. Loyalty pricing, coupons, and multi-buy offers can flip the ranking too. Running the numbers takes seconds and routinely reveals that the family size costs more per ounce than the standard one.
Beyond Price: What Else to Weigh
The cheapest unit price only pays off if you actually use the product. For perishables, a large size that spoils before you finish it raises your real cost per used unit. Consider shelf life, storage space, and how quickly you go through the item. Unit price is the starting point for a smart decision, not the whole story — all calculations run locally in your browser, so nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
